February
25, 2008: Trinidad completely outclassed Jamaica to
capture the 2008 Stanford Twenty20 million dollar tournament
on Sunday evening. The 2007 runner-ups routed Jamaica for a
paltry 91 runs in 16.4 overs, with slow left-arm
chinaman Dave Mohammed capturing four wickets for 20 runs
from his 4 overs, often "bamboozling" (quoting Sir Vivian
Richards) the Jamaicans. In the words of legend
Jeff Dujon, Chris Gayle's lack of form continued and at
times it highlighted his deficit in technique.Trinidad
captained by Darren Ganga, had no trouble chasing down the
target, scoring 94 runs for 1 wicket in 9.2 overs.
Though not an attractive cricketing final, it was an
enjoyable spectacle and overall fairly representative of the
tournament. Stanford 2020 is a tremendous addition to
regional cricket and in time, regional cricket should rise
to the occasion.
