February 21, 2008: The much-hyped IPL (India Premier
League) Auction, is finally over and several familiar
names have come out big winners. Among those attracting big
bids was West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle whose bid
was $US 800,000. Out of the 79 players available for
auction, only two were withdrawn - Mohammad Yousuf and
Ashley Prince. Some key players like Mike Hussey, McGrath
and Justin Langer were retained at their reserve price,
after they found no takers in the initial bid. Fellow
West Indians Chanderpaul and Sarwan fetched $US200,000
and $US225,000 each respectively. All three will be
competing against each other in the 59 match tournament
scheduled for April 18 to June 1.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, currently captaining the Indian
international side, topped the chart with a bid by
team Chennai of $1.5m
This multi-million dollar, International Cricket
Council-sanctioned tournament will feature eight city
franchises - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Jaipur,
Chennai, Chandigarh and Hyderabad. Each franchise will pay
the winning bid to the player annually and each player's
contract has been guaranteed for a three-year period by the
Indian cricket board (BCCI).
