Teachers Vs Student Violence
Kingston, Feb 19 (Prensa Latina) Classes at several
secondary schools in Kingston and other areas of Jamaica
were suspended Tuesday because teachers did not report to
work in protest of attacks by students and their relatives.
There has been an increase in such attacks by students in
recent weeks, with a knife threat against a teacher and
principal on Friday by the father and uncle of a reprimanded
student setting off the teacher protests last night and
today.
Jamaican Teachers' Association President Ena Barclay said
the students' relatives invade the schools and attack the
teachers who are tired of the situation, and the association
has declared "zero tolerance for such violent incidents."
The government recently announced installation of metal
detectors due to the proliferation of vandalism and attacks
on school premises.
Education Minister Andrew Holness said the government will
study means to stop the incidents.
